- The book Oxford Reference “Ships of the Sea” by I.C.B. Dear and Peter Kemp
- The Revenge at Military History Online by John Barratt
- The book ’Seamanship in the Age of Sail’ by John Harland.
DETAILED HISTORY
English Galleon Revenge (1577)
The English Galleon Revenge (1577) was a revolutionary 46-gun race-built galleon that transformed naval warfare and became a legendary symbol of maritime defiance.
Design Innovation: Built by Mathew Baker, it featured a sleek, low-profile hull that traded massive upper decks for unprecedented speed and maneuverability.
Armada Flagship: Served as Sir Francis Drake‘s flagship in 1588, leading the decisive attack against the Spanish Armada.
The Last Stand: In 1591, under Sir Richard Grenville in the Azores, it was trapped by 53 Spanish warships.
Heroic End: The ship single-handedly fought the fleet for 15 hours, inflicting massive damage before finally surrendering. It sank in a storm shortly after, preventing Spanish capture.
